SHANGHAI (ANTARA) – Chinese search engine Baidu has filed a lawsuit against Apple Inc and the developer of fake chatbot app Ernie, which can be downloaded from Apple’s App Store.
Ernie, designed with Baidu’s artificial intelligence (AI) and launched in March, is touted as a chatbot competitor to the US-developed ChatGPT.
Chatbots are programs designed with AI so that computers can mimic human conversations via text or voice messages.
Baidu said it had filed a lawsuit with the Haidian People’s Court in Beijing against fake app developers Ernie and Apple.
“Currently, Ernie does not have an official app,” Baidu said in a statement Friday via the official “Baidu AI” account on WeChat.
Baidu also uploaded a photo of the document filing a lawsuit in court.
“Until there is an official announcement from our company, the Ernie apps you see on the App Store or other stores are fake,” the statement read.
Apple has not responded to a request for comment.
A Reuters search on Saturday found that there are still at least four apps using the bot’s name Ernie in Chinese, all bogus, in Apple’s App Store.
Ernie’s bot can only be used by users who volunteered and received an access code.
In its statement, Baidu also warned people not to trade the access codes.
