Hangzhou (China) (AFP) – Bahraini world champion Winfried Yaffe added a new gold to her tally at the Asian Games on Monday in Hangzhou, China, with an easy victory in the 3,000m steeplechase, a day after she was crowned in the 1,500m.

While Yafi retained the title of the last edition in Jakarta 2018, the Kenyan runner broke the championship record, recording 9:18.28 minutes, ahead of the Indians Parul Chaudhary (9:27.63 minutes) and Preeti (9:43.32 minutes).

The best record in the Games was owned by Bahraini Ruth Jebet (9:31.36 minutes), which she recorded in the 2014 Incheon edition.

Bahrain raised its tally to five gold, one silver and 4 bronze, placing it in tenth place overall.

Yafi (23 years old), who won the 3,000m steeplechase at the 2023 World Championships in Budapest, told Agence France-Presse that she would content herself with participating in the 3,000m steeplechase at the Paris Olympics next summer. “I don’t think I will be able to run both races in the Olympics. “I will focus in particular on the 3,000m steeplechase in Paris.”

Bahraini Salwa Eid Nasser, the 2019 world champion in the 400 m race, suffered a resounding blow in the 200 m race, when she was excluded from the race due to a false start.

After Nasser was excluded, Singaporean Veronica Pereira won easily (23.03 seconds), while Bahraini Ididong Odiong, the 100 and 200m title holder, won bronze with a time of 23.48 seconds.

The Bahraini harvest began on the first day when Viola Mutusiu won gold in the 10,000-meter race, and on the second day, Olakemi Adekoya won gold in the women’s 400-meter race, while Balu Birhanu collared gold in the men’s 10,000-meter race.

Salwa Eid Nasser also won silver in the women’s 400m, while Hajar Al-Khalidi won bronze in the women’s 100m, Ali Abbas won bronze in the men’s 400m, and Marta Utah won bronze in the women’s 1500m.

Bahrain hopes to win more medals in the remaining athletics competitions, as it is participating with 38 male and female runners in the current edition.
