Bahrain to Increase Work Permit Fees for Expatriate Workers: Cabinet Proposed 10% Hike

Manama: As part of a boost to indigenization in Bahrain, there is a plan to increase work permit fees for expatriate workers by 10 percent or more. The proposal in this regard was presented to the members of Parliament and Shura by the Cabinet delegation headed by Finance Minister Sheikh Salman bin Khalifa Al Khalifa.

The committee has presented three options. Currently, a fee of 100 dinars is charged for issuing and renewing a non-resident worker’s permit. 72 dinars in healthcare costs and five dinars each as a monthly fee for businesses with up to five employees. Businesses with more than five workers will have to pay 10 dinars per worker. Under the first option in the new proposal, the fee for issuing and renewing a worker’s permit will be increased from Rs 100 to Rs 200. 144 dinars for health care. 10 per month for businesses with up to 5 employees.

For businesses with more than five employees, the rate of 10 dinars will be increased to 20 dinars. The second option would increase the fee for issuing and renewing a worker’s permit by 10 percent to 110 dinars. Healthcare fees will increase by 10 percent to 80 dinars. The monthly fee will be increased to 10 dinars for businesses with up to five employees and to 20 dinars for businesses with more than five employees. In the third option, the fee for issuing and renewing the permit will be 970 dinars. The recommendation is to increase health care to 144 dinars, the monthly fee to 50 dinars for businesses with up to five workers, and 80 dinars for businesses with more than five workers.

The change is expected to take effect on January 1, 2025. Some of the MPs are of the opinion that this change will help increase the number of citizens in administrative, vocational and supervisory jobs. There is an opinion that 6,000 expatriates should be exempted from government jobs within a clear time frame and the labor market should be redefined in favor of natives.
