Bahia Football Team Prepares for Pre-Season in Manchester City, England

Close to completing one year with football under the management of City Football Group, the Bahia will do the pre-season in Manchester, England, at the facilities of Manchester City, the conglomerate’s main club. But the series of training sessions abroad is nothing new for Tricolor, who carried out their last “international preparation” in 2017.

In January 2017, Bahia took part in the pre-season in Orlando, in the United States, after being invited to participate in the Florida Cup Challenge, a tournament that brought together clubs from different countries. It is worth remembering that, a year earlier, Tricolor was on North American soil to play an international friendly against Orlando City, led by Kaká at the time.

In addition to Bahia, the Florida Cup hosted Wolfsburg and Bayer Leverkusen, from Germany; Estudiantes and River Plate, from Argentina; Barcelona de Guayaquil, Ecuador; Millonarios, from Colombia; Rowdies, from the United States; Shanghai FC, from China; in addition to the Brazilians Corinthians, Atlético-MG, Vasco, Internacional and São Paulo.

– Totally. I fear, yes [sofrer goleadas]. We don’t have to hide what we fear. I’ve already put. But it is a competition that is there. When you weigh in, that damage is at stake. It’s up to you, to the best of your ability, to make sure this doesn’t happen. The most important thing is the experience and training you are receiving. In some moments, you need to enter [em uma competição como essa] to be part of a group. Then, this entry sometimes has its price. This is the price of Bahia, taking this risk, to be able to coexist with these big brands. So we have to take that lemon, in the best way possible, and make lemonade. And don’t forget to add sugar – he said at the time.

  • Goalkeepers: Anderson, Jean e Felipe;
  • Laterals: Armero, Matheus Reis and Tinga;
  • Defenders: Eder, Jackson, Lucas Fonseca, Tiago and Rodrigo “Becão”;
  • Midfielders: Diego Rosa, Feijão, Juninho, Júnior Ramos, Régis, Renato Cajá, Renê Júnior, Yuri and Zé Rafael;
  • Attackers: Edigar Junio, Gustavo, Hernane, Mário and Kaynan;
  • Technician: Guto Ferreira.

The competition format was straight points, with two games played by each team. In the event of a draw in normal time, each team would take one point to the home country. The winner of the penalty shootout guaranteed another point.

In the first match, Bahia was 0-0 against Wolfsburg. Gustavo, Renato Cajá and Feijão were unable to convert the penalties, and the German club won the dispute 3-2 [assista à reportagem no vídeo abaixo]. On that occasion, Tricolor debuted newly hired reinforcements: Gustavo, Edson, Zé Rafael, Armero, Matheus Reis and Diego Rosa.

After the Florida Cup, Bahia started the 2017 season well, with an undefeated streak of eleven matches. There were seven wins and four draws, the first being in the debut, a 0-0 against Fortaleza, in the Copa do Nordeste, which would have the Bahian Tricolor itself as champion in that edition.

The first defeat would only happen in the 12th game and resulted in elimination from the Copa do Brasil. The Squad suffered 2-0 against Paraná, in Curitiba, and fell in the second phase [assista à reportagem no vídeo abaixo].
