Bahia beat Santos, on penalties, today (31), for the return game of the round of 16 and qualified for the quarterfinals of the Copa do Brasil. The teams tied 1-1 in normal time.
Cauly opened the scoring for Bahia, but Bruno Mezenga, in extra time, left everything the same for Santos.
On penalties, Bahia won 4-3. Camacho and Mezenga wasted their charges for Peixe, and Ademir for Tricolor de Aço.
The opponent of the Bahian team in the next phase will be known through a draw.
Bahia returns to the field next Saturday (3), when they face Fortaleza, away from home, at 4 pm (Brasília time). On the same day, but at 9 pm, Santos receives Internacional in Vila Belmiro. The two games are valid for the 9th round of Série A of the Brasileirão.
How was the game
The first half of the match featured few offensive actions side by side and a lot of study. Despite the ball trapped in the midfield for most of the stage, Bahia had two danger shots.
Bahia bet on speed and long throws. In this way, the home team even opened the scoring with Biel, but the goal was annulled for offside.
On the other hand, Santos tried to pace the match more when he had the ball and exchanged passes trying to find a flaw in the marking.
The second half started with pressure from Bahia, who had more of the ball and started to corner Santos. Replacing Biel, who was injured throughout the match, Ademir put more fire in the duel.
Bahia’s pressure had an effect on an error by Rodrigo Fernández that led to the home team’s goal. Behind on the scoreboard, Odair Hellmann launched Santos into the attack, putting Ângelo in place of Lucas Lima.
Despite being more offensive along the final stretch of the duel, Santos found itself facing a closed defense that gave few spaces. The long shots weren’t dangerous, but the aerial ball in the extra time left everything the same.
With the result equal, the decision was left to penalties.. Bahia, with the brilliance of Marcos Felipe, advanced to the quarterfinals of the competition.
Important bids and goals
Not worth! – Bahia even took the lead in the 13th minute, but Biel’s goal was annulled. The attacker was released by Rezende, dominated and finalized firmly. However, he was offside.
almost the first – João Paulo avoided what would be Bahia’s first goal, in the 40th minute. In a cross in the area, Kanu headed to the ground. The goalkeeper from Santos flew in the right corner and spread it out for a corner.
Over the top! – Santos arrived for the first time with danger in the second half. Mendoza received it on the right of the attack, pulled it to his left leg and finished firmly from outside the area. The ball went over the goal.
passed by scraping – Bahia responded soon after with Everaldo. The center forward received it at the entrance to the area, dominated in the chest and finished from the left. The ball skimmed João Paulo’s left post.
1 x 0 – Bahia took the lead at Fonte Nova. Everaldo shared the ball with Rodrigo Fernández on the sideline, avoided the exit and crossed for Ademir. The attacker headed it in, but João Paulo performed a miracle. In the spare, Cauly dominated and, from the half moon, did not give chances to the goalkeeper.
1 x 1 – Santos’ draw came out in the match’s additions. In a corner kick in the area, Bruno Mezenga appeared behind the defense and headed it into the net.
Penalty shootout! – The two teams hit their first charges until Camacho missed Santos’ fourth. With a chance to close the confrontation, Ademir wasted the fifth of Bahia. However, Marcos Felipe, soon after, made his second defense in the series, stopping Bruno Mezenga, and sealed the classification of the home team.
