Baguio City Mayor Benjamin Magalong has stated that he does not think there was a cover-up of a drug haul in Manila last year. Police officer Rodolfo Mayo Jr was found in possession of almost a ton of shabu, for which he now faces criminal charges. However, Interior and Local Government Secretary Benhur Abalos presented a CCTV footage showing that two generals and other members of the PNP Drug Enforcement Group tried to save Mayo Jr. Despite this, Magalong found no indication that the PNP leadership attempted to spare the cops involved in the seizure of shabu, particularly since the Chief PNP stands on moral ground. Domingo, the former head of the PNP Drug Enforcement Group, has left his position as a countermeasure to the allegations of cover-up. The Napolcom will investigate the recorded incident. Magalong, a well-respected police general, is confident that there was no cover-up from the PNP leadership’s side, despite the allegations. He is a member of a five-man advisory group that assesses third level officers’ involvement with the trade of illegal drugs.
