Bagneux: Gisèle Halimi and Simone Veil will give their names to the first two streets of Mathurins

Nearly 700 voters. The inhabitants of Bagneux have made their choice from a list of six women: two streets in the future Mathurins district will bear the names of two committed women, Simone Veil and Gisèle Halimi. The third will be called “rue des Carrières” to recall the history of this site.

The city council has just confirmed their votes by adopting the names of these first three roads that will make up the 16 ha district, the first homes of which will be delivered in 2023.

A strong signal for the city which wishes to be voluntary on the equality between the women and the men whereas for the moment it has only four female streets.

“Our wish is to promote committed women, as has been done for men for centuries in the public sphere. Equality also progresses when the promotion of personalities is not done to the detriment of women, ”explains Marie-Hélène Amiable, mayor (PCF) of Bagneux.

Thus, Gisèle Halimi, lawyer and feminist activist, will give her name to the street which will host the future general education high school of Bagneux. The “rue Simone-Veil” will be a main axis that will link the district from east to west, with an important place given to soft mobility. To recall the history of the site, “rue des Carrières” came out on top in the vote launched on February 8, in front of “rue des Thomson”.

“Quarries are an important part of the city’s history. Some stones of great monuments, such as the Arc de Triomphe and Notre-Dame de Paris, come from Bagneux. It is also the case of the Pantheon, where unfortunately very few women rest, moreover ”specifies the elected official.
