Baghdad Protesters Attack Swedish Embassy Over Burning of the Koran

Baghdad

Dozens of demonstrators Irak attack the embassy complex Sweden in Baghdad to protest the action burning of the Koran. The action that sparked anger among Muslims around the world was masterminded by an Iraqi refugee who now lives in Sweden.

As reported AFPFriday (30/6/2023), demonstrators who were mostly supporters of the leading Shia cleric, Moqtada Sadr, reportedly entered the building and stayed inside for 15 minutes before leaving peacefully when Iraqi security forces were deployed to the location.

The demonstrators were the first to demonstrate outside the Swedish Embassy in response to Sadr’s calls for the Swedish ambassador to be expelled, which fueled anger in several Muslim-majority countries over the burning of the Koran in Stockholm on Wednesday (28/6) local time.

In their action, the demonstrators distributed leaflets containing messages in Arabic and English which read: “Our constitution is the Koran. Our leader is Al-Sadr.”

Scribble reading “Yes, yes to the Koran” was scrawled across the gate leading to the Swedish Embassy compound.

Demonstrators at the rally in Baghdad also burned rainbow flags representing the LGBTQ community, after Sadr’s cleric said this would be the “best way to provoke” those who support burning the Koran.

Sweden’s foreign ministry said in a statement it was “well informed of the situation”.

“Our embassy staff are safe,” the Swedish Foreign Ministry said in a statement.
