The engineer, who works at Paris City Hall, was on a train in Gare du Nord heading to Creil on Monday evening. He had put his bag in the overhead rack. The man’s train was delayed, and when he wanted to transfer to another train, he noticed that his bag was missing.
The bag may have had sentimental value to the man, but its contents were undoubtedly more important. His work laptop and two USB sticks contained very sensitive data, more specifically the local police’s plans for the security of the Olympic Games. The local railway police have started an investigation.
The summer games will take place in the French capital from July 26 to August 10. In addition to the 35,000 employees of security services who have to keep everything running smoothly, Mayor Anne Hidalgo has deployed 2,000 police officers.
