‘BAFTA expands number of nominations to ensure diversity’ | NOW

At the upcoming BAFTA Awards, the most important British film awards, ten instead of six titles will have a chance to win the prize for the best film. Five other important categories will also get a contender, reports BBC News Thursday.

The number of nominees for Best Actor, Actress, Supporting Actor, Supporting Actress and Director will be increased from five to six.

This decision was made after strong criticism of the latest award, in which only white actors were nominated for the main acting awards. Also, no woman had a chance to win the prize for the best director. Because of the criticism, the organization behind the BAFTAs has examined its own working method.

A thousand members are also added to the group that can view the longlist of films and vote. These new members belong to under-represented groups.

These changes, the organization said, should lead to “a more representative and inclusive” list of nominees, “who reflect today’s British society”.

The British Academy Film Award has been presented annually by the British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) since 1948. The ceremony usually takes place in February, just before the Oscars are awarded. In 2021, the prizes will not be awarded until April 11. For example, filmmakers who have been affected by the corona measures will have a longer chance to register.

During the most recent edition 1917 voted best film. Major acting awards went to Joaquin Phoenix, Renée Zellweger, Brad Pitt and Laura Dern.
