Spanish tennis player Paula Bados, who was seen last week making a racist gesture on social networks, has withdrawn from the WTA 1000 tournament in Wuhan due to injury.
Badosa was supposed to play a first-round match against Australian Ajla Tomlianovic on Tuesday, but a few hours before the match, the organizers announced that the 15th ranked player in the world would not participate in the tournament due to a gastrointestinal illness.
Last week at the WTA 1000 in Beijing, where Badosa reached the semi-finals, the athlete’s coach Paul Toledo posted a photo on social media showing the tennis player pulling his – out the corners of his eyes with chopsticks, which is considered a racist gesture. The former vice-director of the rating apologized for her gesture after waves of criticism, while Toledo deleted the photo from social networks.
Last year, after a similar incident, the International Cycling Union (UCI) fined two cyclists for such a move, and they also had to take part in educational courses aimed at against discrimination.
