Paris – Badminton player Jan Louda defeated Uriel Canjura from Salvador 21:12, 21:10 at the Olympic tournament in Paris and kept his theoretical chance of advancing from the three-member basic group. The 25-year-old native of Pilsen won the first Czech victory among men under five rings in history and the first since the victory of Tomasz Mendrek in Barcelona 1992, who was still representing Czechoslovakia. On the other hand, Tereza Švábíková failed in her first Olympic duel, losing 19:21, 21:19 and 18:21 to the Ukrainian Polina Buhrová.

Adam Mendrek and Ondřej Král lost their third match in the basic group in the doubles tournament. With no chance of advancement, they concluded their Olympic appearance with a duel with the French sibling pair Christo Popov, Toma Junior Popov, to whom they lost 18:21, 19:21.

The Czech No. 1 Louda won the duel against his training partner from Pilsen unequivocally. He raced to a 10-2 lead in the first set and won by nine points. In the second set, Canjura held on longer. From the 12:10 mark, Louda won the remaining nine exchanges in a row and celebrated his first win under five rings. Mendrek also congratulated him on the court.

After the triumph, Louda moved to second place in Group M. He has a theoretical chance to advance, but his Sunday defeater Loh Kean Yew from Singapore, who will face Canjura on Wednesday, is in the leading position.

The 24-year-old Švábíková was unable to follow up her two-set victory over the four-year-younger Buhrová from the European Championship in April at the Porte de La Chapelle Arena. At the same time, in a duel between players on the edge of the top ten in the world rankings, the seven-time national champion did not confirm the role of a slight favorite.

In a long match lasting more than an hour, Švábík managed to enter the decisive third set. She led from the opening ball and built up a lead of up to 8:4. Buhrová, who lost to Tunjungová in two sets in Sunday’s match, turned the tide five points in a row and built up a lead that she never let go.

“The long wait for the first match did not add to my peace of mind. In addition, playing in front of a packed hall of 8,000 people, when everyone is looking only at you, is like in tennis, if you played your first match immediately on the center court at Wimbledon,” Švábíková admitted her nervousness on the association’s Facebook page.

“Polina, even thanks to the fact that she was already played and had the first match behind her, obviously coped with it better from the beginning. In the end, the little things made the decision. I have to process everything that I just experienced in my head and I believe that the negative experiences will disappear and only the positive ones will remain. I’ve had an Olympic start and I’ll remember it for the rest of my life. I was physically sick, but I was inches away from winning,” she added.

On Wednesday, the Czech debutant will face the world number nine and seventh seed Gregoria Tunjung from Indonesia for the hope of advancing from the three-member group G.
