Yesterday a badger was found dead on a field in Deurne. The animal lay there with a wound in its back. The badger is a protected species and shooting such an animal is punishable. “This is a crime,” said the animal police.
The animal police are investigating and asking people who have more information to report. According to the police, no suspect has been identified yet.
Mari de Bijl of the Brabants Landschap foundation is amazed at what the badger has been done. “That is very sad,” says the forester Broadcasting Brabant. He wonders why anyone would do this. “Sometimes people hardly need a reason to kill something. Then they just get in the way, or they are afraid that they will damage agriculture or eat animals. But it goes a long way to shoot a badger.”
Currently an estimated 5000 to 6000 badgers live in the Netherlands. These are mainly found in the Veluwe, in East Brabant and South Limburg.
