Baden-Württemberg’s Landesvertretung kicks off political summer break with traditional ‘Stallwächterparty’

Berlin’s political summer break has been kicked off with the traditional “Stallwächterparty” (Stable Guard Party) hosted by the state government. Every year, the event invites guests to a twilight gathering. However, this time, political parties in Berlin are competing with each other to host their own parties.

The Baden-Württemberg state representation in Berlin marked the start of the political summer break with the traditional “Stallwächterparty”. According to the State Ministry, around 1800 guests, including Minister-President Winfried Kretschmann (Green Party), ministers, and state parliament members from the southwest region, attended the event on Thursday evening.

However, Federal Chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD) and Federal Finance Minister Christian Lindner (FDP) were not on the guest list. The two are likely preoccupied with other matters. The so-called Heating Law was supposed to be passed in the Bundestag on Friday after a long tug-of-war, but the plans were initially thwarted by the Federal Constitutional Court. Now, it is expected to be passed after the summer break.

Among the attendees at the mild Baden-Württemberg evening were CDU party leader Friedrich Merz and Minister of Agriculture Cem Özdemir (Green Party), who is still considered a favorite for Kretschmann’s successor in the southwest. Saarland’s Minister-President Anke Rehlinger (SPD), Saxony’s Prime Minister Michael Kretschmer (CDU), actor Sebastian Koch, and singers Daniel Grunenberg (Glasperlenspiel) and Laith Al-Deen were also expected to attend.

The 58th edition of this party had the theme “AI – Artificial Intelligence”. It has been one of Kretschmann’s preferred topics for years, as the use of intelligent and more or less autonomous computers is expected to modernize state administration and improve healthcare. Kretschmann stated that Baden-Württemberg is the “European hotspot for AI” with the Cyber Valley in Tübingen, the AI Innovation Park in Heilbronn, and the Cyberforum in Karlsruhe. “Artificial intelligence will enter all areas and transform them,” said the Minister-President. He added that it can be used for almost everything but jokingly mentioned that it cannot be used for French lessons.

The state premier faced strong criticism from teacher associations for his remarks on language and AI last Monday in Ludwigsburg. He stated, “In ten years, everyone will put a button in their ear that will translate what is being spoken simultaneously.” He emphasized the importance of young people being proficient in English but questioned the need for everyone to know a bit of French when they can’t even order an ice cream on vacation.

The “Stallwächterparty” is held every year before the parliamentary summer break in political Berlin. It is one of the largest summer parties in the capital. Originally, it was held in the middle of the parliamentary summer break, but in recent years, it has been held shortly before. The event has been celebrated since 1964 when it was held in Bonn, and it was a smaller gathering with around 70 staff members who had to “guard the stable” while enjoying red sausages and Trollinger wine.
