With a high-profile photo campaign, the Ravensburger Fair Trade Cooperative WeltPartner would like to draw attention to the state partnership between Baden-Württemberg and Burundi, the resulting fair+bio partnership coffee and the successful agroforestry project. “For every person who has their picture taken for the campaign, four shade trees will be planted in Burundi for coffee cultivation in agroforestry systems,” explains Thomas Hoyer, CEO of WeltPartner eG, the basic idea. The photo campaign will start on February 3rd. start at the “Mundologia-Messe” in Freiburg and tour the year 2023 through Baden-Württemberg to set an example at various events. The aim is for thousands of people to be photographed there using a photo box and for up to 50,000 trees to be planted as a result of the campaign. This creates new perspectives for the smallholder families and protects the climate in Burundi!
The background to the campaign is the partnership that has existed since the 1980s and was formalized in 2014 in a state partnership between Baden-Württemberg and Burundi. As part of this, sustainable projects in the East African partner country are financially supported by the state government in Stuttgart – including the agroforestry project, from which currently 11,000 and planned in the next 4 years up to 25,000 coffee farmers and their families in Burundi will benefit.
“Cultivation of coffee in agroforestry systems is one of the most effective measures to sustainably increase yields on the tiny areas of smallholder families, to improve food security, climate protection and biodiversity, and to protect the important resources soil and water,” explains Professor Heidi Megerle, Project manager at the Rottenburg University of Applied Sciences.
WeltPartner eG has been committed to this for years, supported by the coffee cooperatives of COCOCA in Burundi. The project is scientifically supported by the University of Forestry Rottenburg and the Université du Burundi. The Development Cooperation Foundation (SEZ) with its competence center
Burundi is responsible for handling the project. The project and the tree planting are financed by state funds approved by the state parliament of Baden-Württemberg.
