Backnang elects new mayor

The former mayor of Backnang is the new mayor in Stuttgart. Now his successor has to be chosen. There are five candidates.
Backnang (dpa / lsw) – The citizens of Backnang (Rems-Murr-Kreis) are called today to go to the ballot box: The more than 28,000 eligible voters are to determine a new mayor. The new election is necessary because predecessor Frank Nopper (CDU) moved to the executive chair of the Stuttgart City Hall. A total of five applicants are still trying to succeed him.
In the election on March 14, none of the candidates achieved an absolute majority, i.e. more than 50 percent of the vote. The mayor of Berglen, Maximilian Friedrich (Free Voters), was only a few votes short of victory. A simple majority is sufficient for new elections.
