Baden-Baden (dpa/lsw) – A mayor will be elected in Baden-Baden this Sunday. Only four of the original eight candidates are standing for re-election. Two men are considered favourites: Muggensturm Mayor Dietmar Späth (independent/58) and Social Mayor Roland Kaiser (Greens/56). Späth received by far the most votes in the first round with 39.6 percent, Kaiser had come to 23.9 percent. Also appearing again: business economist Bettina Morlok (independent/59 years/5 percent) and the former director of the municipal gallery Fruchthalle Rastatt, Peter Hank (Die Basis/67 years/1.7 percent).
A simple majority is enough to win the new election. It is unclear to what extent non-voters in the first round – that was over 58 percent – can be mobilized and who will benefit from the departure of Mayor Margret Mergen (CDU). The incumbent mayor only got 24.7 percent of the votes. That’s why she didn’t want to compete anymore. The health resort in the Black Forest is a World Heritage City and has 56,000 inhabitants.
