Baden aid project supports people in need in Ukraine – abroad

Olga Gashchyts from Lviv, Ukraine, who is suffering from cancer, depends on the free medication from the aid project from Germany. With her pension, she couldn’t afford the drugs.

When Olga Gashchyts speaks of number 130, her hands rest. The slight tremor disappears. “Number 130 was the most beautiful piece of jewelry I’ve ever made. A narrow ring set with a red stone. It was surrounded by golden leaves,” says the 75-year-old. There is a lot of pride in her voice. It tells of the great amount of time it takes to manufacture. “Still, it wasn’t particularly expensive for the customer. That’s why nobody wanted to buy it. That doesn’t mean anything for a bonus,” said the old woman. “But it’s the details that make life beautiful. Or not?”
The small room with the old gas stove looks like the Soviet Union never passed. Nothing here is younger than 40 years. Even when looking through the window, time seems to have stood still: gray apartment blocks from socialist times are lined up. The voices of children and young people from the nearby school can be heard on the fifth floor.
