Bad Wurzach Plans Record-Breaking 53.8 Million Euro Investment for 2023

The city of Bad Wurzach wants to invest more money than ever before this year: a total of 53.8 million euros. This emerges from the budget that treasurer Stefan Kunz presented to the local council for resolution in January.

The lion’s share of this is made up of fiber optic expansion in the third largest municipality in the state of Baden-Württemberg. Kunz has budgeted 34.9 million for this. The city has to finance at least 3.3 million euros of this itself, with the federal and state governments contributing the majority of the rest.

Use up savings

Despite this huge amount of funding, the municipality has to pay almost 18.1 million euros of its total investment amount from its savings. This causes them to melt together a lot. At least no new loans are needed. Instead, a quarter of a million euros will be repaid. The city’s debts will fall to 2.6 million euros. That’s just under 173 euros per capita; according to the State Statistical Office, the national average for municipalities was 1,408 euros at the end of 2022.

Even if you add the debts of the two own wastewater operations (without loans from the city: 3.6 million euros) and spa operations (1.3 million), Bad Wurzach is still below the national average at just under 500 euros per capita.

Money for building land

And the city continues to invest in promising projects. 2.5 million euros, including 1.6 million euros in grants, are planned for the tower on Ried. It is intended to attract even more tourists to the city. The plan provides 890,000 euros for the development of building areas and a further 2.5 million euros for the acquisition of further future building land. Investments that will one day bring a lot of money into the coffers through property sales. For this year, one million euros from property proceeds are on the credit side of the plan.

Other million-dollar projects affect the fire department: New vehicles cost 1.2 million euros (including 157,000 euros in subsidies), and 1.25 million euros (370,000 in subsidies) are planned for the new single-door building. The plan calls for 2.6 million euros for the renovation of the Seibranz gym and festival hall. 1.445 million euros of this are to be financed through grants. However, these have not yet been bindingly confirmed.

The road network

Some money is invested in the road network. The renovation of Ratperoniusstrasse in Arnach is expected to cost 800,000 euros. The costs for additional barrier-free bus stops amount to 225,000 euros. 155,000 euros of this are grants. Bridge renovations cost half a million euros. According to the plan, resurfacing municipal roads will cost 300,000 euros.

The city will also invest a lot of money in schools. Specifically, there are around 180,000 euros each for media and as a grant to the private Salvatorkolleg. The youth work, especially the renovation of the new youth club, will cost the city 380,000 euros. More than a million euros flows into kindergartens. According to the plan, the expansion in Dietmanns alone will cost 900,000 euros.

Other large amounts

Other major items in the investment plan include the modernization of the city’s IT system (540,000 euros), the renovation of the town hall (550,000), the redesign of the Bad Wurzach cemetery (350,000), the establishment of a heating network for public buildings in Ziegelbach (470,000) and flood protection measures (465,000).

A long list worth millions that the city has decided to work through. In addition to the financial burden, implementation will primarily depend on whether the town hall can provide the necessary manpower.
