The development of the bad weather Daniel reveals the extent of the damage done in the area, in which is also the submerged Stefanovikio, headquarters of the Army Aviation Brigade (1st CLASS) which had been converted into an underwater base and for very expensive Apache helicopters.
In his post, Kostas Lagouvardos, Research Director of the National Observatory’s Environment Institute, cites a video and comments on the evolution of the floods and the level of Lake Karla after the disasters created by the bad weather “Daniel».

The satellite images of the evolution of the flooded areas in the Magnesia area and more specifically in Lake Karla 5 months after the “Daniel” storm, as recorded by the European satellite Sentinel-2, are revealing.
The following video (animation) shows the evolution of the flooded areas in the area of Lake Karlas, from the bad weather “Daniel” which hit Thessaly with particular severity. The floods started from 05.09.2023 in the area as the level of the Pinios (and its tributaries) increased.
The area of Lake Karlas began to grow sharply immediately after the rapid rainfall, reaching and exceeding 180-190 thousand hectares at its maximum area, which was observed at the end of September and beginning of October 2023. Its area was maintained throughout the winter ( more than 120-140 thousand acres) with a tendency to shrink.
According to the latest satellite data analyzed and processed by meteo.gr/EAA, the area of Lake Karlas on February 12, 2024, amounts, approximately, to 140 thousand acres.
