Bad News from Pekalongan, HIV/AIDS sufferers are still high, people must be careful

PEKALONGAN – The City Government of Pekalongan City, Central Java, noted that the number of people with “Human Immunodeficiency Virus/Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (HIV/AIDS) in 2021 was still high, as many as 620 people.

Head of the Pekalongan City Health Service, Slamet Budiyanto, said that of the number of patients, 190 of them were declared dead and 150 people were receiving treatment.

“This condition is quite alarming and there are still many HIV/AIDS sufferers who have not received proper treatment,” he said after the launch of the Care Support Treatment (CST) service for HIV-AIDS patients at Jenggot Health Center, Pekalongan Selatan District, reported by Antara, Friday, January 14.

Budiyanto said it was necessary to provide support services from both families and residents to HIV/AIDS sufferers as an effort to prolong life and make these sufferers stay healthy and productive.

Currently, he said, there are 12 health service facilities (fasyankes) that can provide services for people with HIV/AIDS, namely 10 health centers and two hospitals (Hospital Bendan and Budi Rahayu Hospital).

According to him, HIV/AIDS services are one of the 12 indicators of minimum service standards (SPM) in the health sector that must be implemented by districts/cities.

Pekalongan Mayor Afzan Arslan Djunaid appealed to the public to be careful about the transmission of the virus which causes the body’s immunity to decrease.

“We have to be careful about how HIV/AIDS is transmitted. This must be suppressed, whether it’s transmitted through the use of syringes contaminated with the blood of an infected person, intimate relationships, and so on,” he said.
