Spanish tennis player Rafael Nadal will not take part in the Tokyo Olympics and will not start in the upcoming Wimbledon grand slam tournament. He announced this on Thursday on the social network Twitter.
“I decided not to take part in this year’s Wimbledon and the Tokyo Olympics. Such a decision is never easy to make, but I listen to my body and after discussing with my team I am convinced that it is the right decision.” wrote Nadal on his twitter account.
The 20-time Grand Slam champion lost last week in the semifinals of Roland Garros to Novak Djokovic. He previously triumphed at Wimbledon in 2008 and 2010, winning gold in the 2008 Olympic singles in Beijing and in the 2016 Olympic doubles in Rio de Janeiro.
“The Olympics is a priority for every athlete. I think everyone wants to experience that atmosphere, I was lucky and experienced it three times and I even had the honor of carrying the flag of my country,” the Spaniard said on his twitter.
According to Nadal, he is unable to get to optimal condition in time after a demanding clay season, and only a two-week break between Roland Garros and Wimbledon had the same effect on his decision. “The goal is to extend my career and continue what I enjoy, that is, to continue to compete at the highest level,” said Nadal.
