TOKYO, kilat.com – When Canon revealed the EOS-1D X Mark III in January 2020, photography enthusiasts felt that DSLRs were “still not dead”. But it will mark the end of the line-up for flagship models that many pro photographers still love to capture, from sporting events to wildlife.
CanonRumors shows an interview that Canon Chairman and CEO, Fujio Mitarai, gave this week to the Japanese newspaper, the Yomiuri Shimbun (via YM Cinema Magazine). This work highlights how high-end interchangeable-lens mirrorless cameras have taken the share of the previously dominating digital single-lens reflex (DSLR) camera market share.
“The market demand is moving fast towards mirrorless cameras. Therefore, we are increasingly moving people in that direction,” said Fujio Mitarai.
The article states the Mark III is “actually” the last model in Canon’s flagship EOS-1 series. It is said that in a few years Canon will stop developing and producing its flagship DSLR cameras in favor of mirrorless cameras.
However, despite what some of the headlines say, that’s not to say this is the end of Canon DSLRs. While the article describes mirrorless cameras like the Canon EOS R3 representing the future of the segment.

The article also mentions, due to strong overseas demand, the company plans to continue making mid-range/intro DSLR cameras for now.
In a statement to The Verge, a Canon US spokesperson confirmed, “The extensive details of Mr Mitarai’s interview as described in the article are true. However, although it is expected to be in a few years, the exact date has not been confirmed for the conclusion of development/cessation of production for the flagship DSLR camera,” he said.
