During the first matches after the winter break, there will not be an audience yet. KNVB director Eric Gudde was told this by Prime Minister Mark Rutte and sports minister Tamara van Ark.
It is a major setback for the KNVB, which wanted to experiment with admitting the public to a limited extent. For that reason, the top matches Ajax-PSV, PSV-AZ, Ajax-Feyenoord and Feyenoord-AZ were scheduled in January. “Unfortunately, the contamination figures do not allow us to return to the phase with a limited audience,” Gudde says in conversation with the Algemeen Dagblad about ‘good consultation’ with politicians.
Those numbers have to be drastically reduced before the public can go to the stadiums again, Gudde has been told. “I understood from Mark Rutte that the IC admissions must in any case go from an average of 24 to a maximum of 10 admissions per day, before relaxation is possible and the stadiums may be open to the public again.”
At the start of the season, a limited number of spectators were still welcome in the stadiums. However, the cabinet soon decided to implement additional corona measures, so that the stadiums also remained empty. Telstar-FC Den Bosch on Monday September 28 was the last match for the time being in which the public was present.
