The situation of Iga Świątek in the WTA Race ranking is getting worse. The best female tennis player in the world dropped another six places in this ranking.
Iga Świątek is still the clear leader of the WTA ranking. The Polish woman has 10,485 points and over the second Aryna Sabalenka – the winner of this year’s Australian Open – over four thousand points advantage. The 22-year-old, however, cannot afford any major slip-ups as she enters a period of the season in which she has plenty of points to defend – there are more than four thousand points to Roland Garros alone. In the latest ranking, Magda Linette moved up to 21st place, which is her best result in her career.
Bad news for Christmas. He has to chase. It’s getting worse
Linette is also high in the fifth position in the WTA Race ranking, which only takes into account the results from a given year. The top eight players will traditionally play at the end of the season in the WTA Finals. Linette is ranked fifth (866 points).
The situation of Iga Świątek is definitely more difficult. A week ago, the Polish woman was classified in fifteenth place. Now it’s even worse, because the best tennis player has dropped as much as six places compared to the previous week. He is ranked 21st with 366 points. Swiatek loses 215 points to China’s Lin Zhu, who is in eighth place, and as many as 2,104 points to Aryna Sabalenka, who is leading in the ranking. Right behind the Belarusian are Jelena Rybakina (Kazakhstan, 1456 points) and the Swiss Belinda Bencic (1206). In fourth place is Belarusian Victoria Azarenka (882). Only in 33rd place is the vice-leader of the WTA world ranking, Tunisian Ons Jabeur (255).
On Monday, February 13, the tournament in Doha begins, in which Iga Świątek will defend her title. Last year it was the WTA 1000 event, this year it is WTA 500. The Polish woman is seeded number one in this tournament. American Jessica Pegula (4th WTA) is seeded from “2” and French Caroline Garcia (5th WTA) from “3”.
Świątek in the first round has a bye. In the next phase, she will face the winner of the meeting Daniele Collins (42nd WTA) with one of the tennis players who will pass the ongoing qualifications. If she wins, Belinda Bencic (9th WTA) or Victoria Azarenka (16th WTA) will be waiting for the Polish woman in the quarterfinals.
