Katja Potzies, president of the Evangelische Stadtmission Freiburg eV, welcomed the guests of the joint tour with great gratitude: “We are delighted that Ukrainian children and young people were so warmly welcomed here and thank the city of Bad Krozingen with Volker Kieber as mayor for the great support.”
Mayor Martin Horn added: “There is an atmosphere here that gives children the feeling of being accepted and welcome. I am very thankful for that. This was made possible by the excellent regional cooperation with the districts of Breisgau-Hochschwarzwald and Emmendingen.”
Andriy Moskalenko underlined the enormous task of continuing the work of an entire Kiev orphanage in this way. He was impressed by this effort and thanked everyone involved. “We are very grateful for their great effort!” He told the children: “Today the Presidents of Poland, Lithuania and Ukraine are visiting our city. But for me, visiting you was more important!
The mayor of Bad Krozingen, Volker Kieber, spoke of an inner need to create safe housing for children. “Thanks to the help of the district office, we were able to use the building for a children’s home. We were also happy to create the necessary school places. The only thing we couldn’t do without was the care of kindergarten children for capacity reasons,” regrets Kieber.
The reason for the tour of his father’s house in Bad Krozingen is Andriy Moskalenko’s spontaneous visit to Freiburg on the occasion of the city’s New Year’s reception. The First Mayor, Mayor Horn and Mayor Kieber inspected the children’s rooms and had conversations with the children and carers.
background
At the end of February, around 170 children and young people from the “Father’s House” near Kiev arrived in Freiburg together with their carers after being evacuated from the war zone. These are children who had already found a replacement home in Ukraine due to difficult family circumstances in their father’s home. Many of them are traumatised.
In the first months, the city of Freiburg quickly and reliably took over the accommodation of the refugees. In order to create a safe home for children and young people, the Evangelische Stadtmission Freiburg eV founded a stationary child and youth welfare branch together with the Vaterhaus gGmbH as an organizational step. Children and young people are looked after professionally at three locations. The locations in Bad Krozingen and Emmendingen are owned by Vaterhaus gGmbH. 31 children are looked after and cared for in Freiburg by Herzgrün gGmbH.
