Poya Asbaghi was presented on Wednesday as coach of the Championship club Barnsley. He is thus leaving his position as national team captain for the U21 national team. The union is now looking for a replacement for the position.
One of the top candidates to take over is Daniel Bäckström, according to Aftonbladet. The newspaper states that the union has had several conversations with the 33-year-old regarding the assignment.
This is not the first time that Bäckström is a candidate for an assignment with the union, the newspaper states. Already a year ago, when Asbaghi was given his assignment, Bäckström was one of the candidates to become his assistant. However, this did not happen, but Bäckström instead became coach of IK Sirius, which was his first assignment as head coach. He is still there even now. Bäckström was before that assistant to Jon Dahl Tomasson in Malmö FF.
U21 will meet next time in March 2022. The association thus has a couple of months before they need to have a solution in place.
– We do not feel panic to find a solution right now. A lot happens in the market and we have to analyze this and take it at the pace it needs, says Claes Eriksson, who is head of the U21 national team, in the press release.
The newspaper also states that the league looks to keep the current assistant league captain, Andreas Pettersson in the staff.
