Backstreet Boys singer AJ McLean “lived a lie” through his drug addiction, he told Monday at Good Morning America. “I was no longer myself,” said the 42-year-old singer.
“The first time I tried drugs was literally an hour before I was supposed to participate in the shooting of the video for the song The Call“McLean recalled.” I was nuts.
The singer said his fellow band members started to notice his unusual behavior when he skipped rehearsals. “They basically broke into my house and threw ice water on me while I was unconscious in my bed,” said McLean. “Everyone started to get it. I wasn’t myself anymore, you know. I was just living a lie.”
In 2019, McLean decided to seek help to be there for his family. “I was never sober. Not a second.” The turning point for the singer came when he came home from a concert by Shania Twain. “My wife could smell it on my breath and the youngest of my two daughters didn’t want to sit with me.”
The Backstreet Boy says he has been sober since that concert, about eleven months ago.
