When Joachim Löw stepped in front of the football crowd on Monday with a kind of Christmas message, the 60-year-old looked visibly touched. Despite the outwardly combative attitude, the national coach is no longer able to get off the defensive. It is similar to the defense of his team in the memorable 6-0 disaster in Spain. Anyone who likes sucked-out idioms will delight in this formulation: At the German Football Association, the tree will be on fire shortly before Christmas. The Löw personality is only a marginal aspect. A power struggle is raging at the DFB, in which President Fritz Keller, who was chosen as the savior, wears himself out. The constant indiscretions about the national team testify to the internal dispute. Loew made it clear again and again in his statements what still drives him. He wants to repeat the feat of 2010, when he created a team from nothing at the tournament in South Africa that delighted the football world and after a maturation process triumphed at the World Cup in Brazil four years later.
