Close to the return to school, next September 14, while we talk a lot (but not enough) about fragile teachers, at risk of contracting the Coronavirus, given the high personal data that makes them particularly vulnerable (over 300 thousand teachers have more than 55 years), here we come across an interesting research on the best and worst jobs from the point of view of health. And as was to be imagined, alongside the reassuring data on the low risks of the teaching profession in terms of general health, which places middle school teachers in the seventh place in the ranking, among the safest jobs, especially in terms of posture; on the other side we are concerned about the data concerning the likelihood of getting a Coronavirus infection, where the working conditions do not allow, as we fear, the respect of the minimum precautions, such as distancing, on which so much is being argued these days.
But let’s take a look at the ranking.
The general classification
The 10 best jobs for general health I’m:
1. Accountants
2. Programmers
3. IT Managers
4. Marketing Manager
5. Lawyers
6. Physicists
7. Middle school teachers
8. Retailers
9. Architects
10. Scientific researchers
As the authors of the research, Kaizen and Lenstore, London Digital PR agency and contact lens manufacturer, explain to us, what makes the job of the teacher (middle school) healthy is the fact that teachers are not subject to movements risky to posture and spend much of their time (or should be) in a safe and comfortable environment.
The other rankings
From the point of view of muscle and joint problemseven the teachers are the first ranked: this means they have fewer problems than others. Which variables were taken into consideration? Time spent bending over; the time spent kneeling, squatting, crawling; the time spent repeating the same movements. And we are sure, reading these criteria, that primary school teachers or kindergarten teachers would not reach the top of the rankings as their secondary school colleagues did.
Secondary school teachers also figure tenths among the professions minus a risk of encountering dangers. Those who practice this profession, in fact, are not particularly exposed to contaminants, radiation or dangerous tools.
The risk of infection
What disturbs us, however, as we have announced, is the result relating to risk of infection, which takes into account exposure to diseases and infections and physical proximity, criteria against which the teaching profession ranks at 25th place out of 48 professions. Proximity, although it is the key to teaching, today becomes a danger.
In short, let’s go back to the usual question: mask or no mask, what matters most of all is the distance, that’s where we play the best of our game against the virus.
