Back to school: Study: Children feel unsafe on one fifth of their way to school

Study: Primary school teachers observe dangerous situations almost every week

Meenken refers to a study that the Transport Club commissioned together with the German Children’s Fund and the Association for Education and Training. “For example, children said that they do not feel safe on around a fifth of the routes.”

Almost 20 percent of the general population also said that children’s road safety was not high enough. Primary school teachers who were surveyed said that they experienced a dangerous situation at least once a week. Almost 30 percent of them experienced it.

Saxony-Anhalt’s transport minister criticizes “parent taxis”

For Saxony-Anhalt’s Transport Minister Lydia Hüskens, the so-called parent taxis are particularly problematic. Some students go by bike, others walk, and then there are the so-called parent taxis. “Then you can risk the safety of other children by increasing the volume of traffic, especially out of concern for the safety of your own child.”

This topic needs to be discussed again and again. It would be a good idea if this topic were discussed in every school. “Up to what age do children have to be taken to school? At what age are children able to manage the journey to school on their own? This can help to alleviate the pressure on such topics a little.”

Hüskens says that unsafe routes to school can be reported to the local authorities. The minister believes it is particularly important to practice correct behavior in traffic.
