Back pain is rarely a symptom of cancer. Injury, arthritis, and overexertion are common causes of back pain. But according to experts, back pain can sometimes be a warning sign of cancer in an advanced or early stage.

If you try to treat your back pain at home but find it only lasts for a few weeks, you should see your doctor, the NHS says, according to the newspaper express.

Bladder Cancer

Pain in the lower back may be a sign of cancer of the bladder — the organ in the lower abdomen that stores urine.

Around 10,300 people in the UK are diagnosed with bladder cancer each year, making it the 11th most common cancer.

Tumors can appear anywhere in the bladder, but it’s more common for them to grow on tissues deeper within the bladder.

“The lining of the bladder is in constant contact with carcinogens that enter the bloodstream and are filtered through the kidneys,” said Dr. Daniel Petrelak of Yale Medicine in Britain.

Carcinogens are chemicals that can interact with your DNA to cause cells to multiply excessively and become cancerous.

Reports indicate that lower back pain is a sign of an advanced form of bladder cancer. If it occurs along with other symptoms of bladder cancer, you should consult your doctor as soon as possible.

These symptoms can include frequent urination, blood in the urine, and pain during urination.

Spinal cancer

Although rare, cancer of the spinal cord and spine may be the cause of back pain.

A benign tumor in the spine, which poses no risk of spreading to other parts of the body, may also be a cause.

If back pain is a sign of spinal cancer, it is an early sign and may spread over time to another location.

According to the Mayo Clinic, the pain may also spread to the hips, legs, feet, or arms and may worsen over time — even if you’re being treated.

Back pain may be the main sign of spinal cancer, but numbness, weakness, poor coordination of the arms and legs, and paralysis may also be symptoms.

Lung Cancer

Lung cancer is another common cancer that may cause back pain.

Some forms of the disease have a low survival rate, so it’s important to see your doctor if back pain appears along with other symptoms of lung cancer.

The main signs of lung cancer include coughing up blood, persistent shortness of breath, a prolonged cough that gets worse, and a cough that lasts for two weeks or longer.

The disease is broadly divided into two groups: non-small cell lung cancer and small cell lung cancer.

Small cell lung cancer is the most common form and has higher survival rates than small cell.

You can reduce your risk of developing cancer by making several important lifestyle changes.

Eating a healthy diet full of fruits and vegetables, getting regular exercise, and not smoking will significantly reduce your risk.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), approximately 30-40 percent of cancer risks can be attributed to lifestyle factors.
