Back pain: an app to the rescue

Back pain, one of the most common causes of long-term absence due to illness, along with burnout, can now be treated with a simple application. The external prevention service Mensura from Hasselt has developed an app with which employees can deal with their back problems through personal exercise schedules and gamification. The app was tested for the first time at Carglass in Bilzen.

SelfBack is an AI-based and scientifically based app that offers personalized exercises and guidance to relieve and manage back complaints based on questionnaires and data from your smartphone. “The app encourages employees with personal exercise schedules and gamification to tackle back problems from the first symptoms,” says Gerrit Pollentier of Mensura.

It is not an unnecessary luxury, because never before have there been more workers with back problems in our country. More than 1 in 10 workers complain of back pain due to, among other things, physical (heavy) work in some sectors, too little variety in position and movement, and a lack of healthy exercise outside of work. This logically leads to very high absenteeism due to illness, usually for long periods of time. “

“With the Selfback app, employees are in control of their own recovery. They will receive practical tips and advice tailored to this.” Like many sports apps and fitness trackers, there is also a gaming element. For example, step goals and exercise targets can be built in through so-called gamification, which ensures that employees are still intrinsically motivated to work back.

The first test will be on Tuesday at Carglass in Bilzen. The purpose of this pilot phase is to further improve the Selfback app based on feedback.
