Back down! Apple Will Allow Service Technicians to Repair Face ID Without Having to Replace iPhone Components

JAKARTA – Apple has finally relented to make major changes in the process of repairing Face ID on iPhone 12 or later at this time. The changes will allow the Apple Store and Apple Authorized Service Providers to repair Face ID without having to replace all iPhone components.

This change was first announced by Apple in an internal memo to employees. The company gives authorized service technicians access to a new TrueDepth Camera “service section” consisting of Face ID and the front camera module.

With that part, the service provider will be able to perform the same unit repair for Face ID issues. This means that if the Face ID module on iPhone XS or later fails, then the Apple Store and Apple Authorized Service Providers can now replace only that module without having to replace the entire iPhone.

Of course, this is a big change, because previously if there was a failure of the Face ID module on the iPhone, the user would need to replace the entire device, and it would cost a lot higher.

quote The Verge, Friday, February 25, the new move will mean Apple can reduce the carbon footprint of its products by reducing the number of repairs on all units. It also means, users don’t lose any data, or even have to bother setting up a new iPhone, just because of one failure.

However, it is not clear when this new repair process will be implemented. The company simply notifies the technician that they will receive training and documentation at a later date.

The news comes months after Apple announced its new Self-Service Repair program. Through this initiative, Apple will instruct customers how to repair their devices at home while selling parts and tools.

Customers will also receive recycling credits when they return used parts after repairing their equipment. Apple said the Self-Service Repair program will launch earlier this year in the United States and then expand to other countries later.

This change comes after Apple last year announced it would be able to repair the back glass of certain iPhone 12 models without having to replace the entire device.
