“Gremlins” director Joe Dante claims the design of Baby Yoda was stolen from his own 80s movie.

He directed both “Gremlins” from 1984 and “Gremlins 2” in 1990. He also directed one of the episodes in the animated series “Gremlins: Secrets of the Mogwai” which comes on HBO Max.
In “Gremlins” we meet the sweet and mysterious Mogwai, who unfortunately gets offspring that are lizard-like monsters if you break some strict, various rules, such as contact with water or feeding after midnight.
In 2019, the character Grogu / The Child appeared in the “Star Wars” TV series “The Mandalorian”. Grogu is a baby variant of the same kind as Jedi Master Yoda.
–“Baby Yoda … is totally stolen and completely copied,” the director told the newspaper, following CNN, adding:
Shamelessly, I think.
He spoke to the San Francisco newspaper on the occasion of the screening of both “Gremlins” films.
–He explained there that he thinks the reason why fans still like the “Gremlins” movies, is the cute Gizmo, reports Hollywood Reporter.
– I think one character is the key to the films’ long life. The character is basically like a child. Which brings me to Baby Yoda, he says.

THR has so far not received any comment from representatives of “The Mandalorian” or series creator Jon Favreau.
According to CNN, the creators of the series have previously said that they had “ET” and “Paper Moon” as sources of inspiration for Grogu. While fans have noticed the similarity since Grogu appeared.
“Gremlins” actor Zach Galligan commented on the similarity Entertainment Weekly i 2021.
“People have bombarded me on social media with comparisons, drawings and everything, and have launched all sorts of theories as to whether it was a conscious decision,” he said.
