The girl, Aya, was still attached to her mother by the umbilical cord when she was found by rescuers. Her mother, father, brothers and sisters did not survive the disaster.
The baby was hypothermic and barely breathing, but soon recovered in hospital. The hospital received thousands of letters from people wanting to adopt the girl.
The hospital was concerned about those requests because adoption fraud is lurking. On Monday, a possible kidnapping was thwarted at the hospital. A nurse and two armed men are said to have hit someone.
The director later denied that it was a kidnapping attempt. Nevertheless, the girl has been transferred to a “safe location”. There she can continue to recover until it is clear what exactly will happen to her.
Adoption is probably no longer necessary, because a great-uncle of the girl has now reported, writes The Guardian. He will take care of Aya once she is released from the hospital. Since his house was also destroyed by the earthquake, he is currently living in a tent with his family.
