BABY’S MANAGER
BABY’S MANAGER
★★★★
You may remember – in the movie That is true love/Love (2002) Mark’s character suddenly filmed Juliet (Keira Knightley) at her wedding, tried to break up a friend’s wedding, then went to her house in the evening and passed notes on how “she is everything.” Everyone sighed: that’s love! However, this particular relationship line in the film, which has become a classic for many, did not seem attractive to me – I think I was nine years old at the time – from the beginning.
The world of cinema is safer than our own reality, and perhaps that is why tracking or stalking in the genre of romantic comedies was often overshadowed by an attractive aura – this element of the genre has come to being what is called a universal metaphor or trope. It was “romantic” to sneeze, appear out of the blue, watch your lover fall asleep, get unwanted attention and especially “loved” by actors like Andrew Lincoln (Mark da That’s the love), Pen Badgley (Maniac Joe in the series You/you (2018-2024) or even Ben Stiller (Ted in the movie There is something about Mary/There is something about Mary, 1998). We saw it as a choice and even a surprising decision for the characters.
XXI century The 1990s came with the scope of social networks, false identities, communication at every step and a more bitter experience in global society – now tracking is less often equated with screwball comedies or ” fated love”. And here we come to an important stop of anti-romanticism in the history of the screen – the little series that became a global phenomenon Baby Reindeer / Baby Reindeer (2024). It is based on the personal experience of the screenwriter and actor Richard Gad – first a monologue was created, which was successfully released at the Edinburgh Theater Festival in 2019, and it is followed by those named as- Yes. In the series Donny – the author of the series another self, and the role is played by Richard Gad himself – he begins his career as an actor and comedian in London and works in a pub. There he meets Martha (the amazing Jessica Gunning), a corpulent, hyperactive woman in her forties. As she gets hold of Donnie’s email, soon a phone number, hundreds and thousands of messages a day, regular visits at work and one night stands follow. He is her “baby reindeer”. Aware of the danger, Donnie communicates with Martha, whose behavior becomes more compulsive and unpredictable, all of which reveals deeper layers of meaning in the story and Donnie’s trauma.
However, the value of the series is not only the measured, ingenious handling of the image of the stalker and criticism of the romanticism it has in culture. Along with great acting and a brilliant turn of scripts, we follow Donnie and his character’s psychology – it’s a tight, thick zone, creating a rarely gripping portrait of the spiral of the victim-self relationship. – speech. And Martha isn’t just an obsessive character like Glenn Close either In Deadly Draw / Deadly Draw (1987) or Kathy Bates in the film Misery/Misery (1990) – she is a person that society does not really want to see.

THE SYMPATHIZER (2024) ★★★★
South Korean noir Pak Chanwook’s master (Decision to leave (2022)) a series about the end of the Vietnam War, in which the Captain (Hwa Shaundei) has a double role. A challenging, intelligent tapestry of identity and Americana, starring Robert Downey Jr. also shining with his presence.

FALLOUT (2024) ★★★★
If you consider yourself a serial The Last of Us / The Last of Us fans, this retro-future setting, which borrows a lot from the computer game of the same name, will be an interesting event. Pop culture garnishes, self-irony (and meta-irony), steampunk, nuclear war, and lonely souls destined to meet.

THE GOVERNMENT (2024) ★★★
Another example of the limits of the Cold War, republicanism and authoritarian rule. Kate Winslet plays the chancellor of a country in Central Europe torn by political currents. Satire has many qualities, but this attempt at a play has several artistic flaws and many missed opportunities.
