Baby Dies, Three Others Hospitalized after Fentanyl Overdose at New York Daycare: Investigation Uncovers Drugs in Hidden Area

“As part of an ongoing investigation into the overdose death at a Bronx daycare on 09/15/23, @NYPDDetectives conducted a search warrant. A large quantity of fentanyl, other narcotics and drug paraphernalia were recovered at “trap floor in daycare play area,” the police said in a tweet.

Photos show more than a dozen plastic bags filled with dust. The discovery happened last Wednesday night and Thursday, when police searched the daycare again after receiving a report about the existence of a hidden space under the floor.

Investigators had already found a kilo of fentanyl stored in the rugs where the minors played, along with a device to press drugs into bricks for sale, according to court records.

Nicholas Dominici, a one-year-old little boy, died last Friday. Three other children had to be hospitalized and treated with Narcan, but their condition is now stable. After a urine analysis of one of the minors, the presence of fentanyl was confirmed.

In this case, two people of Hispanic origin who own and manage the day care home have been arrested, while the police investigation into the presence of the drug, probably fentanyl, in the day care center continues.

How the events occurred

Last Friday, the NYPD responded to a 911 call before 3:00 pm reporting that two minors were in cardiac arrest at the child care center.

Upon arriving at the scene, authorities found the one-year-old baby in critical condition, unconscious and unresponsive. He was pronounced dead upon his arrival at Montefiore Medical Center.

Two other children had symptoms of opioid exposure.

At first it was suspected that the minors were poisoned due to a carbon monoxide leak in the building where the Divino Niño daycare operates in the Bronx. But the hypothesis was discarded shortly after the first signs of drug intoxication in the minors were detected.

The survivors underwent blood and urine tests to detect the presence of the drug. According to New York Health Commissioner Ashwin Vasan, the victims somehow came into contact with a “powerful substance.”

The New York police preventively detained Carlisto Acevedo Brito, 41, and Grei Méndez, 36, who are apparently in charge of the business, on suspicion of being involved in what happened on Friday afternoon.
