Provincial and assembly elections as an unpopular calling card of the government. Even before the second round, it is certain that the ruling parties in the upper chamber will weaken. The government’s Pirates did the worst – none of their candidates even made it to the second round of the Senate elections. On the other hand, the opposition and especially the ANO movement can rejoice after the first round of elections to one third of the Senate. Although still unable to overturn the government’s majority in the upper house, Andrej Babiš’s movement has already won two seats in the first round and has a chance to succeed in the second round as well.
The ruling ODS won nine out of ten mandates in the first round. TOP 09 has a chance to win two seats in the second round, as does the People’s Party. The opposition movement YES has unusually optimistic expectations for the second round, in which there will be a total of 19 candidates in the final round. Before that, however, he did not do very well in the Senate elections.
Five candidates have already won in the first round this year. Among those close to the government are Pavel Fischer in Prague 12 and Jiří Čunk in Zlín. MPs Jana Mračková Vildumetzová and Martin Bednář in Ostrava-měst won more than half of the votes for the ANO movement in Sokolov. Already in the first round, Petr Vích from SOCDEM (formerly ČSSD) in Karviná also defended himself.
The second round of the election will offer attractive duels in some areas. For example, in Břeclav, a former policeman will meet in the second round Robert Schlachta (Oath) and MP Miloslav Janulik (THERE ARE). In the district of Prague 4, the defense senator and the former presidential candidate will compete Jiří Drahoswho missed out on a victory in the first round, p Josef Svoboda for ANO.
In Prague 2, he will protect a doctor and a grandfather Marek Hilšer (for the transfer of Marek Hilšer to the Senate), also known to the public from the presidential election, against the Egyptian Miroslav Bart (not p. back of STAN). A senator nominated for KDU, ODS and TOP 09 defends in Litoměřice Ladislav Clupač the face To Ondřej Štěrb nominated for ANO.
An attractive duel will also be offered in the second round in Benešov, where last weekend there was the largest turnout ever. The senatorial seat will be contested here Zdenek Hraba (non-party for Conservative Party, ODS, Czech Crown and Free) by former Minister of Justice Helena Valková from YES. In the first round, on the other hand, the former hockey goalkeeper failed Dominik Hasek (for TOP 09).
In Náchod, it will be a fight between the governor of Králové Hradec Králové and the former police chief Martin savage from ODS and Jan Borůvka from YES.
He will defend in Třebíč Hana Žáková (not str. for STAN) against the longtime director of the fire department Drahoslav Ryba (nestr. for ANO).
In Prague 8, the current pirate senator did not defend the post Lucas Wagenknecht and in the second round the deputy mayor of the city area will compete Vladimir Ludkova from the ODS with the mayor of Letňany Zdenek Kučera from YES.
The turnout was relatively low, even by the standards of assembly elections, which in the Czech Republic are generally considered second-rate elections. 30.47 percent of citizens participated in the first round, about ten percent less than in 2018, when the elections were last held in these constituencies. The second round will take place on Friday 27 and Saturday 28 September.
