Azzurri’s Strong Second Half Despite Injuries Worries Ahead of World Cup Selection

Two tries and a lot of good things in the second half, but Riccioni and Menoncello who were injured were worried

Summer Nations Series: a good second half in the 33-17 defeat by the Azzurri in Ireland (ph. Paul Faith/AFP)

DUBLIN A good reaction in the second half sent Italy defeated but with their heads held high from the Aviva Stadium. The Azzurri are showing many good things against one of the favorite teams to win the World Cup, even if the many players who have gone out due to injuries are worrying in view of the selection of the 33 who will go to France.

Large voids in the stands of the Aviva Stadium. The holiday period and certainly not popular prices mean that the response is very different from those of Murrayfield and the Principality stadium for the other matches of the day.

Italy forced to make a change in the starting XV. Toa Halafihi has to forfeit due to gastroenteritis, Lorenzo Cannone wears the shirt n. 8 and on the bench with number 21 goes Giovanni Pettinelli.

Italy wins the first scrum over the Irish 22, Allan converts from the pitch. Italy makes a lot of possession in the first minutes and few mistakes. On 10′ Ferrari replaces Riccioni, who comes out supported by doctors. The knee injury looks serious. On the following play the first long Irish pressure in the Italian five meters led to a try from Kilcoyne, converted by Crawley. Garbisi sends the resumption of the game directly into a lateral foul but the scrum in mid-field has no effect. A foul by Fiscetti in the ruck on the 22nd sends the greens into a throw-in on the 22nd (18′), Reynal stops the Irish cart for a veil from Henderson.

In the 21st minute Stockdale wins an aerial duel and opens the action on which Menoncello saves on O’Brien launched by a kick from Earls. Soon after, Odogwu also comes out with a cut to his head. Ireland makes little mistakes and the Azzurri are forced to defend themselves. In the 28th minute yellow card for Fischetti who comes out complaining about an offside that hasn’t been called. On the following free-kick the greens go into touch and Doris scores the second try from a cart.

Ireland still in attack in the 35th minute but on the blue pressure the cart loses the ball forward. However, the greens press, Italy fails to release and McLoskey scores the third Irish try: 21-3 in the 37th minute, a score with which we go to the break.

We return with Lamaro and Fusco on the field for Zuliani and Varney, while Frawley makes his debut in Ireland. In the 48th minute there was a nice move towards the right by the Azzurri, stopped in extremis by Stockdale. The advantage continues, the oval goes from left to right in a flash and Pani scores in the right corner. Allan turns, 21-10.

An excellent blue defense stops the Irish cart on five meters in the 56th minute, the next free scrum. The bitterness on the shields immediately after for a mole cricket that stops another Irish attack. The green pressure returned and it was another series of charges on the goal line that caused Cian Healy’s fourth green try in the 65th minute, on which Crawley missed the first kick. Italy immediately recovers the oval in the 22 opponents on their throw-in, goes into the throw-in, on which Menoncello scores the second blue try: 26-17 in the 70th minute.

Ireland tries to relax in the 71st minute but once again Italy stops them. The fifth try comes shortly after by Doris for the pressure applied in the five meters, where the Irish forwards prove to be stronger and more organised. However once again the blues were able to stop the game with the more imaginative hand of the Irish.

More bad news at the end: Menoncello leaves in tears, losing him would be a big bad thing. It ends 33-17, it is not the hard defeat that has been seen many times here.
