U19 European Championships: Italy climbs to the top of Europe, Portugal beaten 1-0 in the final
The Azzurrini prevailed 1-0 thanks to a goal by Kayode
After a summer full of events, Italy can finally celebrate an international trophy: the Azzurrini U19s are European champions, thanks to their 1-0 victory over Portugal in the final.
Predictions saw the Lusitanians as big favourites, not only for their great run in the competition, but also for their 5-1 victory against Italy last July 6th. The decisive challenge, however, proved to be very balanced, with chances from both sides.
Just 20 minutes were enough to decide the result, when Michael Kayode, Fiorentina defender, opened (and closed) the scoring with a header at the far post inspired by Hasa.
Both sides attacked relentlessly, with the chances coming mainly for the Azzurri, but the score remained firm at 1-0 after the full-time whistle, handing the national team an unexpected and well-deserved victory.
Gravina: “Historical success”
“Historic success! The boys were extraordinary, as were coach Bollini and all the staff, they created an exceptional group capable of imposing themselves in a very difficult tournament, winning against opponents on paper that are much more quoted” said the FIGC president Gravina after the blue victory.
“Now the responsibility of Italian football is not to waste the great work done by Club Italia and the talent of the Azzurrini. This European triumph is the best answer to those who, without knowing the great work we are doing with the youth national teams, prefer to abandon themselves to defeatism and the hysteria caused by a defeat” he concluded.
