Azpilicueta’s pass to Zlatan Ibrahimovic

It was in the final stages of the World Cup qualifier against Spain that Zlatan Ibrahimovic, 40, handed out a tackle on the back of César Azpilicueta. The Spaniard fell to the ground and the whole thing led to a minor quarrel between the players, after which the Swede was awarded a yellow card which means that he misses Sweden’s upcoming play-off semi-final.

In the Spanish media, Ibrahimovic has been heavily criticized for the increase. Tomás Roncero, columnist at AS, describes the situation as a “street attack”. Marca was also critical of the Swede’s actions.

“Zlatan’s deplorable actions against Azpilicueta: this was his attack from behind,” writes Marca.

César Azpilicueta could have added one to the visitors’ lead if his free kick had gone just a little lower. On Monday, the day after the match, the Chelsea defender chose to send an easy pass to Zlatan Ibrahimovic.

“Everything is fine here”, writes Azpilicueta on his Twitter account along with a happy picture of himself in national team clothes.

The 1-0 victory against Sweden means that Spain is now ready for the World Cup in Qatar 2022. For Sweden, the play-off awaits.
