Azerbaijani president upset about Dutch motion against his country

“The fact that the parliament is taking such an unbalanced and, in my opinion, unjust decision, will of course not help us to forge closer ties,” Aliyev told new Dutch ambassador Pauline Eizema, who came to offer her credentials.

The Azerbaijani president emphasized to Eizema that “Armenia has attacked us” and that Azerbaijan has defended itself against it. According to him, the country has succeeded in liberating territories that belong to Azerbaijan “according to the norms and principles of international law and historically”. According to him, the future relationship with the Netherlands will depend on the further steps that the Netherlands takes.

Nagorno-Karabakh agreement

Armenia and Azerbaijan reached an agreement on the disputed region over a week ago. The agreement states that Armenia will return several areas in or around Nagorno-Karabakh to Azerbaijan in the coming weeks. Azerbaijan also retains control of areas it has conquered in recent weeks.

Nagorno-Karabakh is an area that belongs to Azerbaijan under international law, but mainly ethnic Armenians live there. Since the early 1990s, the region and areas around it have been under Armenian control.

Azerbaijan refused to accept this. Fighting broke out in September in which Azerbaijan managed to gain ground. Far poorer Armenia was losing, and Armenian Prime Minister Pasjinian said last week that he had no choice but to sign the deal. Fighting on would have resulted in even more loss of territory, he said.

It has been agreed in the agreement that 2,000 Russian soldiers will monitor compliance with the truce.
