Azerbaijan GP, Leclerc and Ferrari on pole! Beaten Hamilton and Verstappen

The Monegasque makes a great lap and with the wake of the Mercedes hits the second pole in a row after Monte Carlo. Gasly fourth, Sainz fifth (with accident in the final)

Giusto Ferronato

A great lap and a trail of Mercedes exploited in full straight: this is the perfect mix with which Charles Leclerc took the pole position of the Azerbaijani GP, repeating that of Monte Carlo two weeks ago. But this time he didn’t crash in the final and therefore tomorrow the Monegasque will start in front of Lewis Hamilton and Max Verstappen enjoying the feat to the full, without fears related to the reliability of his SF21.

Pole was sanctioned by Yuki Tsunoda’s accident in turn 3 in the last minute of the session, followed by the Ferrari of Carlos Sainz who at the same point ended up on the escape route to avoid the Japanese. The Spaniard will start fifth behind Pierre Gasly.

Leclerc redemption

So Leclerc immediately redeemed himself after the accident in Monte Carlo and tomorrow he will have a good opportunity to give important points to the Cavallino. He will have to beware of a Hamilton who never gives up, despite an imperfect Mercedes, and of Verstappen himself, who, like in Monte Carlo, was unable to make one last quick attempt with his Red Bull. Sixth Norris (then penalized by 3 positions), seventh Perez, then Tsunoda, Alonso and Bottas.

Q2 on the wire, then Ricciardo slams

In Q2 a fantastic duel on the edge of thousandths. The Red Bulls of Verstappen and Perez took the lead ahead of Hamilton and finished in just 9 thousandths. Tsunoda and Leclerc are also very close. The session, however, ended with a minute and 30 in advance due to an accident by Daniel Ricciardo in turn 3: red flag to remove McLaren and session ended due to the inability to launch before the checkered flag. Thus eliminated Vettel, Ocon, Ricciardo, Raikkonen and Russell.

Q1, turn 15 fatal to Stroll and Giovinazzi

Q1 was blocked after a few minutes due to an accident by Lance Stroll who also paid a heavy duty at turn 15, this weekend really “cursed”: the Canadian went long in the left braking and hit the barriers destroying the suspension front right, for him the qualifications ended and a very bitter elimination. At the resumption the same problem for Antonio Giovinazzi with Alfa Romeo. The Apulian went long in braking and before he could remedy it, his Alfa was already aimed against the barriers: also for him the right front was destroyed and the car on the tow truck.

Lando penalized

Double red flag and investigation for Lando Norris on the second: after qualifying the Englishman was penalized by three positions on the starting grid and therefore will start ninth. The red flag appeared while he was on the straight and the Englishman explained to the stewards that while slowing down, he hesitated about what to do (return to the pits or stay on the track). The referees, instead of punishing him with 5 places, imposed a penalty of 3 places. The double interruption certainly bothered the riders, whose rhythm was broken. In the end, Hamilton set the best time of the stage ahead of Verstappen and Perez’s Red Bulls. Eliminated Latifi (Williams), Schumacher (Haas), Mazepin (Haas), Stroll and Giovinazzi.
