A great lap and a trail of Mercedes exploited in full straight: this is the perfect mix with which Charles Leclerc took the pole position of the Azerbaijani GP, repeating that of Monte Carlo two weeks ago. But this time he didn’t crash in the final and therefore tomorrow the Monegasque will start in front of Lewis Hamilton and Max Verstappen enjoying the feat to the full, without fears related to the reliability of his SF21.

Pole was sanctioned by Yuki Tsunoda’s accident in turn 3 in the last minute of the session, followed by the Ferrari of Carlos Sainz who at the same point ended up on the escape route to avoid the Japanese. The Spaniard will start fifth behind Pierre Gasly.

So Leclerc immediately redeemed himself after the accident in Monte Carlo and tomorrow he will have a good opportunity to give important points to the Cavallino. Double red flag and investigation for Lando Norris on the second: after qualifying the Englishman was penalized by three positions on the starting grid and therefore will start ninth. The red flag appeared while he was on the straight and the Englishman explained to the stewards that while slowing down, he hesitated about what to do (return to the pits or stay on the track). The referees, instead of punishing him with 5 places, imposed a penalty of 3 places. The double interruption certainly bothered the riders, whose rhythm was broken. In the end, Hamilton set the best time of the stage ahead of Verstappen and Perez’s Red Bulls. Eliminated Latifi (Williams), Schumacher (Haas), Mazepin (Haas), Stroll and Giovinazzi.
