Azerbaijan and Armenia agree on fragile ceasefire

The biggest clashes between Armenian and Azerbaijani security forces on the border on Tuesday have been since the Nagorno-Karabakh military conflict last year.

The Armenian Ministry of Defense has reported that one Armenian soldier has been killed and 24 more have disappeared. Azerbaijan has reported the deaths of seven soldiers and another 10 have been injured.

On Tuesday evening, Armenia and Azerbaijan managed to conclude a ceasefire through Russia. Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu has spoken over the phone to his Armenian and Azerbaijani counterparts, calling for an end to the clashes.

CONTEXT:

There have been hostile relations between Azerbaijan and Armenia since the war in the Nagorno-Karabakh region in the 1990s. The region is internationally recognized as part of Azerbaijan, but is mainly inhabited by ethnic Armenians.
