Two-time Grand Slam champion Victoria Azarenka has congratulated Novak Djokovic on his “record-breaking performance” at the 2023 ATP Finals. This success once again underlines Djokovic’s exceptional skills on the tennis court.

An unbending winning mentality

Former world number one Azarenka particularly highlighted Djokovic’s ability to raise “his game and the will to win no matter what” after defeats – an aspect she considers the most underrated element in tennis.

Djokovic, a 24-time Grand Slam champion, produced an impressive performance in Turin, defeating world No. 4 Jannik Sinner 6-3, 6-3 in the final of the ATP Finals. With this victory he surpassed his great rival Roger Federer and reached a record seven titles at the year-end championships.

Triumph and resilience

The 36-year-old Serb responded to his three-set defeat against Sinner in a thrilling group stage match with a win over Hubert Hurkacz. In the knockout phase, Djokovic only lost a total of 11 games against Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner.

Djokovic described his performances against his two young rivals as the best matches he has played in his incredible 2023 season. His reaction to the painful five-set loss to Carlos Alcaraz in the Wimbledon final was remarkable.

Since then, the Serb won his next four tournaments, including the Cincinnati Masters, the US Open, the Paris Masters and the ATP Finals last week. “Novak’s ability to raise his game and his will to win after defeat is, in my opinion, the most underrated element I have seen in tennis!

Congratulations on another record-breaking performance @DjokerNole,” wrote the 34-year-old Belarusian. Azarenka, currently ranked No. 22 in the world, won the Australian Open in 2012 and 2013 and was in the finals of the US Open in 2012, 2013 and 2020.

Djokovic will conclude his season at the Davis Cup Final 8 in Malaga this week, where he will aim to lead Serbia to a second title in the team competition.
