AZ starts construction stadium roof after agreement with construction company | NOW

AZ has reached an agreement with BAM Bouw en Techniek regarding the construction of the new roof of the AFAS Stadium. The preparatory work has now started.

Halfway through the Eredivisie season, the roof must be ready and meanwhile AZ can continue to play in the stadium that opened in 2006.

Last season, the Alkmaar club moved to the CARS Jeans Stadium of ADO The Hague before the winter break, after part of the roof collapsed in August 2019. In December, AZ returned to its own stadium, where the entire roof had now been removed.

The new roof looks different from the previous one. It continues 4 meters longer on all sides towards the field, leaving more supporters dry. In addition, the light poles disappear, because sustainable LED lighting is built into the eaves.

‘We are taking a step forward’

Robert Eenhoorn, general manager of AZ, is pleased that the construction of the roof can start. “As a club we take this a step forward, despite the difficult time we are together. We offer our fans a safe, comfortable and innovative stadium,” said Eenhoorn on Friday on the club’s website.

The construction company BAM was also involved in the construction or renovation of the Johan Cruijff ArenA, the Philips Stadium, De Kuip, the GelreDome and the Euroborg, which is now called Hitachi Capital Mobility Stadium.

It also built stadiums in Germany and Soccer City Stadium in Johannesburg, where the Dutch national team lost the World Cup final 1-0 to Spain in 2010.
