Aysel Erbudak Sentenced to Prison for Embezzlement at MC Slotervaart Hospital

Former director of MC Slotervaart hospital Aysel Erbudak has been sentenced to eighteen months in prison after an appeal, six of which are conditional. The court in Amsterdam still considers it proven that she embezzled 1 million euros with false invoices, among other things.

The case concerns an embezzlement from 2008. The court had previously sentenced her to fifteen months. Erbudak appealed against this.

The embezzled amount went to a private project in Turkey. She also bought shares in one in 2011 with money from the hospital e-healthproject. Those shares went to a company in which she and her children were shareholders.

The court believes that Erbudak should actually have received twenty months in prison. But the process took too long through no fault of the ex-director. This has been taken into account in the amount of the sentence. The court also finds it unnecessary to ban her from being a director of a company. That’s because she also received a suspended prison sentence with three years’ probation.

Money intended for medical care

According to the court, Erbudak has undermined confidence in the healthcare system. From 2006 to 2013, she was director of the MC Slotervaart hospital in Amsterdam Nieuw-West. The money was intended to provide medical care to sick people. Erbudak seems to have only had her own gain in mind. The hospital was declared bankrupt in 2018.

The case emerged shortly after her dismissal in 2013. The dismissal followed conflicts within the hospital. Civil lawsuits later left Erbudak with millions in debt. She was eventually declared personally bankrupt.
