The Draguignan union club athletics has occupied the top of the pavement for a few weeks like its young representative Ayoub El Amani who burst the screen by achieving, on the occasion of the recent international meeting in Toulouse, the U20 minima for the championships of Europe over 3,000m steeplechase which will take place in August in Jerusalem (8’49”76).
It erases from the shelves the old record Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur juniors which was the property of Nadir Bosch (9’00”30) since June 24, 1992. A time synonymous with 17e French under-20 all-time performance. Excuse a bit!
His qualification now goes through a podium this summer as part of the French championships on July 15 in Châteauroux where competition will be fierce.
Indeed, the battle for Europe U20 promises to be very undecided on the specialty where they are already three athletes to have achieved their minima: Pierre Boudy (8’46”83), Ayoub El Amani (8’49”76) and Youssef Boutayeb (8’52”38).
A pure product of the club
Trained at DUC athletics, he began his career under the guidance of Claude Gil as a youngster before joining the middle-distance group of Pierre Irle where he has already achieved great performances and in particular a fifth place in France in cadets 2 over 2,000m steeplechase and a ninth still in France in juniors 1 over 3,000m steeplechase. He was already the holder of very interesting times (5’59” in the 2,000m steeplechase record Paca cadets and 9’06” in junior 1 in the 3,000m steeplechase).
Since September 2022, Ayoub El Amini has been training in Fréjus alongside Akim Zillali and Teddy Butet. The first named knows perfectly the steeplechase discipline with a record in 8’25” and several selections in the French team as well as participation in many international meetings including that of Paris.
At the top of his game
After a lot of work on the land throughout the winter, the young representative of the city of the Dragon has just had his best season in cross-country with successes at the Var, Pre-regional, Regional before finishing in the 21e place of France in Brittany. Then, he went on to refine his preparation on the track with an altitude training course in Morocco with the Fréjus club. Akim Zallali defines Ayoub as “a hard worker who brings a real dynamic to the group “. Ayoub, Akim and Teddy quickly understood that it was possible to put out a huge performance from the start.
Indeed, three days after Toulouse, he continues with a 3’51” at Orange as part of the Interclubs. In any case, very high-end. A young talent who has certainly not finished talking about him.

Second Var club behind the city of Toulon, the sub-prefectural club chaired by Claude Gil has just won a convincing third place at the Interclubs (honor) in Orange. It had been more than 20 years since the DUC had been on the Interclub podium.
All of these excellent results (Var championship for cadets to masters in Draguignan, meetings in Monaco, Cannes, Toulon, Toulouse, etc.) are linked to the training work advocated by the club, the athletics schools (Christophe Inacio, Stéphanie Veyrat), the other categories with Claude Gil (youngest), Renaud Ecaulle (minimal), Bernard Montagna (youngest, minimal and throws), Christophe Inacio, Henri Lafon, Marie Reynaert (cadet and junior sprint group), Pierre Irle (cadet middle distance group and juniors) and Eric Lavaux (seniors, masters). DUC athletes who will be meeting soon, on June 10 and 11, in Luminy, as part of the Pre-regionals and on June 24 and 25, for the Regionals in Avignon.
In any case, the latest results that say a lot!
