Ayo Edebiri Makes Her Impressive Debut on Saturday Night Live

Emotional Debut on Saturday Night Live

Ayo Edebiri, a rising star in the comedy scene, recently made her debut on the iconic late-night sketch show, Saturday Night Live. Filled with excitement, Edebiri took to the stage with a mix of emotions, fighting back tears as she shared her heartfelt journey.

Having been born and raised in Boston, Edebiri proudly declared herself as the first Black woman to acknowledge her Bostonian roots, making it a historical moment for herself and the Black community. With only a few days into February, she already feels honored to make Black history.

A Powerful Mix of African and Caribbean Heritage

Edebiri highlighted her multicultural background, revealing that she comes from an immigrant family with African and Caribbean roots. Humorously acknowledging the challenges she faces, she revealed, “So you know what that means… I’m in therapy.”

Sharing Long-Held Dreams Come True

Expressing her deep connection and passion for Saturday Night Live, Edebiri shared her experience of jotting down a packet of ideas for the show in the past. Among her ideas, she recalled envisioning a sketch called “White Jeopardy,” which humorously featured white participants playing the popular game show. Another comedic idea involved a character with a catchy catchphrase, delivering it with a mix of Keenan Thompson and the Queen of England mannerisms. However, confident in her growth as a performer, she humorously asked for the packet to be “burned” as a testament to her progress.

Feeling at Home in the New York Comedy Scene

Closing out her monologue, Edebiri expressed her genuine excitement and gratitude. Having developed her comedic skills in the New York comedy scene alongside her close friends, she feels blessed to be working with them on a platform as illustrious as Saturday Night Live. With a sense of “homecoming” and anticipation for the night, she concluded with her signature catchphrase, “Let’s hop on to it now.”
